ANZAC Button

WALT: Summarise the authors purpose
SC: Complete the timeline showing how you felt through the narrative


The Anzac Button by Judy Raymond. Illustrated by Elspeth Alix Batt.


The writer has written the story, as if the buttons are alive, or have real human feelings. This type of language feature is known as personification.
By interpreting the clues provided by the buttons decide what the wearer of the jacket did through the
years.





  1. Why do you think the jacket and buttons were left in the cupboard for a year at a time? Explain your answer with as much detail as possible.


  1. Key Vocabulary find and complete these words from the text. Then write the definition (meaning) of each word in your own words (do NOT copy straight from the dictionary)


  1. khaki:khaki is a greenish colour
  2. pried:when you are so happy you are super pride
  3. dodged:To avoid someone
  4. battlefield:When people fight on the battlefield
  5. trench:People is on the trench to not be killed
  6. mildew:Mildew Live stuff behind and it will get rotten
  7. pre-dawn:Pre dawn is a different word for night
  8. wail:Wail is a high-pitched for cry
  9. bugle:Bugle is instrument like a trumpet
  10. regiment:Regiment is a huge group of soldiers
  11. rummaged:rummaged is a unsystematic and untidy search
  12. gleamed:Gleamed is when you make everything tidy


3. Create a timeline to show how the button felt throughout the story.
