SMLJ Activity 2 - Bonus Activity - Day 1 - 2017

Activity 2: Setting Sail
The first settlers to come to New Zealand must have been really brave! They had to leave their original homes and sail thousands of miles across the ocean on a special boat called a ‘waka’ to reach New Zealand.

Imagine that you were on board one of the wakas. On your blog, write a short letter to a friend telling them about your voyage to New Zealand. In the letter be sure to tell them how you feel about moving to a new country. If it was me, I would have felt really nervous…

Good Ayy people, I’m very happy that I’ve migrated from my country to this wonderful country you have. I’m very shy to be here because I don’t know if this is the same as my own country that I was living in, I cannot wait to see the stunning areas around this country.

Bonus Activity: Waka Ama
To this day, the people of New Zealand still use waka. Instead of using their waka to transport them from one place to another, they sometimes use waka in special events and in sporting competitions such as Waka Ama. Both boys and girls compete in Waka Ama boat races.

Watch this short video of a Waka Ama race. On your blog tell us whether you would like to be in a Waka Ama race one day. Why or why not?

I would definitely be in the Waka Ama because I could inspire one another to be in the Waka Ama and I can be showing the world my skills that I’ve got. Also It’s a good workout and I world participate in the Waka Ama one day,
BONUS POINTS: 10

  1. Kia Ora Danny,

I, too, would love to be in a Waka Ama race. I think that it would be a really cool challenge and I would enjoy being part of a team. Do you play on any teams at the moment?

When I was younger I used to play on a basketball team and I really loved it. I'm hoping that Aronui will take up basketball so that I can go and watch him.

I see from your post that you've also written about the experience of moving countries for Activity #2. Unfortunately, I couldn't quite read the end of your sentence because it has blended into the books that you've got as a background for the blog site. Is there any way that you could re-format it so that it all fits in the middle of the page? It would also be great if you could structure your letter for activity #2 as a letter that starts with 'Dear...'

I'll pop back and see if you've been able to make those changes so that I can read it and give you full points for the activity!

    Cheers,
    Rachel :)
